Dual Clutch Replacement

A DSG (Direct-Shift Gearbox) is a dual-clutch automatic transmission used widely in VW Group cars (Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda, SEAT). Instead of one clutch like a manual gearbox, it has two clutch packs — each responsible for alternating gears (odd/even). These clutches engage and disengage thousands of times during normal driving.

Over time they can wear out, leading to:

  • Shuddering or jerky take-offs
  • Squealing/chirping under acceleration
  • Gear slipping or delayed engagement
  • Transmission warning lights
These are common DSG clutch concerns.

If wear is significant, the clutch packs themselves need replacing — not just a fluid or software fix.

What is involved

DSG clutch replacement is much more involved than a standard manual clutch job. Key steps generally include:

  1. Diagnosis — scan codes & road test
  2. Remove transmission — gearbox must be dropped from the car
  3. Disassemble DSG — access clutch packs and possibly mechatronics
  4. Install new clutch packs & seals
  5. Refill with correct DSG fluid & filter (very important)
  6. Adaptations & coding — reset DSG control module settings using VW-specific diagnostic equipment
